Symposium VI, 2008
Symposium VI concluded October 30, 2008 at the Broadmoor Hotel in Colorado Springs. By all accounts, the program lived up to it's reputation as "the nation's leading public forum" on HD/HS matters. With an expanded international presentation, Symposium VI featured presentations from Australia, Canada, Mexico, Norway, and Singapore. Keynote speaker, LTG Tom Metz, Commander of the Joint IED Defeat Organization, wowed the audience with his real-time presentation of technology that is currently in use by the US Army in the fight against IEDs. Presentations William Pentney, Associate Deputy Minister of National Defence, Canada, and ADM Jorge Pastor Gomez, Chief of the General Staff of Mexico, were highlights of the first morning. A panel of distinguished experts, including Bret Stephens of The Wall Street Journal, concluded the afternoon session.
Gen. Gene Renuart, Commander of NORAD & USNORTHCOM led off the second day presentations. Equally important remarks were delivered by others, focussing on the growing cyber threat. RDML Jan Hamby, J-6 at NORAD & USNORTHCOM concluded the day's outstanding program. Day three concluded with impressive presentations by The Honorable Jim Clapper of The Defense Intelligence Agency, Charlie Allen, Undersecretary for Intelligence and Analysis for the Department of Homeland Security. The final panel of the conference featured veteran intelligence experts to wrap up Symposium VI. Symposium V, 2007
SYMPOSIUM V concluded on October 4, 2007 at the Broadmoor Hotel in Colorado Springs, CO. The Symposium was attended by leading figures and high ranking dignitaries from the Department of Defense, the Department of Homeland Security, and many corporations. The keynote speaker was Stephen Flynn, noted author of "The Edge of Disater; Rebuilding a Resilient Nation." Also appearing was Gen. Victor E. Renuart, Commander of NORTHCOM and NORAD. Several panels were convened to discuss Maritime Domain Awareness, the Challenges of Preparing for a Special Security Event in a Border Area, Maritime Security Technology, The Promise of Technology for Securing our Homeland, and others.
One of the highlights was a presentation from Ms. Zainab al-Zuwaij, President of the American Islamic Congress. Ms. al-Zuwaij's remarks drew a standing ovation from the nearly 600 people in attendance.
Closing the panel presentations was the 1st NHDF Media Panel, featuring Josh Rushing from Al Jazeera, Bret Stephens of the Wall Street Journal, Barbara Starr of CNN, Randy Larsen of NPR, and Cori Dauber of UNC-Chapel Hills.
Symposium IV, 2006
The 2006 Symposium was held at The Broadmoor Hotel in Colorado Springs, Colorado. It was the 4th in a series where dignitaries and high ranking officials and executives from government and insustry met to share challenges and solutions to our growing homeland defense and homeland security issues. _______________________________________________________
The 2005 Symposium was held at the Broadmoor Hotel in Colorado Springs, CO. This was the 3rd national forum convened at the initiation of Gen. Ed Eberhart, the first Commander of NORTHCOM, and the first conference prepared and conducted by the newly formed National Homeland Defense Foundation, and concluded on October 27, 2005.
