September 11, 2001 Memorials
Thanks to The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, the National Homeland Defense Foundation was able to acquire several artifacts from the twisted wreckage of the World Trade Center. NHDF granted artifacts to each of five military installations in Colorado Springs, dedicating them as a stark reminder of the need for national security and defense. The beam above is to be on permanent display at the Cheyenne Mountain Air Force Station.
The US Northern Command September 11, 2001 Memorial Plaque, below, reads as follows:
“In Remembrance of the nearly 3,000 innocent lives lost at the hands of terrorists on September 11, 2001. This steel beam – recovered from the remnants of the World Trade Center – is pointing towards New York, and pays respect to the lives lost there. The Pentagon-shaped planter honors our fallen comrades and friends at the Pentagon. The Pennsylvania soil in the planter pays tribute to the brave passengers of Flight 93. From the ashes of the terrorist attack on September 11th arose U.S. Northern Command, a combatant command ready to defend the homeland and support civil authorities. This memorial is for all to know that US Northern Command stands ready to defend liberty. Let us never forget.”
Fort Carson also received a piece of the tangled remains; a stark reminder to the men and women of the 4th ID deployed to the front lines of Afghanistan and Iraq, on the importance of their mission. The memorial shown was dedicated on June 19, 2010 by MG David Perkins, Commander.

The US Air Force Academy temporarily displayed their donated artifact on Sept. 11, 2010 on the east side of Falcon Stadium. A permanent display will be constructed in 2011.
