NHDF Announces Grants of $48,800
The National Homeland Defense Foundation (NHDF) announced that it has made grants of $48,800 to various military programs in Colorado through the Homeland Defender’s Fund™ that the Foundation administers.
Programs receiving grants at Ft. Carson include rehabilitation for wounded warriors, family programs on marriage counseling, domestic violence seminars, and support for the Fallen Heroes Center and the Family Readiness Center. The Colorado National Guard was awarded a grant to support child care programs, and the US Air Force Academy received a grant for their Airman and Family Readiness Center program.
“We are grateful to the many citizens of our community who have so generously donated to the Fund that allows support of these very worthy programs for our military members and their families. The State of Colorado continues to be very supportive of our men and women in service to our nation,” said Don Addy, President of NHDF.
The Homeland Defender’s Fund is a charitable non-profit fund that receives donations from citizens and corporations who want to support military programs. Donations and gifts to the fund are combined with others and then contributed to various support programs at Colorado military installations. Northeastern University wins top award; USMA West Point is second; University of Calgary third
Northeastern University captured the top prize of $10,000 for their entry in the 2012 National Security Innovation Competition held at the University of Colorado Colorado Springs on Friday, April 27, 2012.

Top Venture Capital Firm’s Founder Confirmed as NSIC Finalist Judge
Without funding, many homeland defense and homeland security research projects wither and never find their way to meet national security technology needs. Michael Steed, Founder and Managing Director of the leading U.S. venture capital firm in national security – Paladin Capital Group – helps to meet those financial needs for emerging technological research or products in homeland security.
And, it is not surprising that Mr. Steed will join a Finalist Judges panel of government and industry leaders on April 27th 2012, as ten teams from across the United States and Canada will get a chance to present their innovative national security research during the National Security Innovation Competition (NSIC).
Beyond his role as Founder and Managing Director, Mr. Steed also serves as Chairman of the Paladin Homeland Security Fund and Paladin III Investment Committees; he is also a member of the Paladin Capital Partners Fund Investment Committee. Mr. Steed provides management oversight of the firm’s operations and investments, and is responsible for the strategic direction of Paladin’s current and future activities. To date, he has completed over 125 direct, co-investment and fund investments during his career.

WHO: National Homeland Defense Foundation (501c3) sponsors the 6th Annual National Security Innovation Competition
WHAT: A Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM)-focused, university student innovation competition that highlights ongoing research creating technologies and concepts that are potential solutions to national security capability needs. Dozens of US and Canadian universities enter each year by submitting short innovation summaries for tech reps to review. The top ten projects are selected and the student finalist teams travel to Colorado Springs to then make personal presentations in front of a national panel of judges (e.g. DHS, DOD, CIA, DOE, Fed Labs, FFRDCs, defense industry, IP/Patent, VC companies). The top three finishers are awarded scholarship prizes. The intent is to inspire students to pursue STEM educations, highlight their research innovation, and provide a venue for rapid transition of cutting edge technologies into useable solutions for the national security user community.

WHY: Student presenters are afforded the opportunity to gain experience with formal presentations, receive inputs on furthering their research, receive assistance on publishing their research, and have a springboard for their innovations to be viewed by a wide cross section of industry and government representatives who focus on national security needs. The judges and audience "tech reps" are given early insight to cutting edge technologies they can assist with further development, shepherd to meet internal mission goals, or provide expertise for project refinement or alternative uses. Engineering students are showcased providing abundant opportunity to be considered for follow-on internships or transition to enter the national security workforce. The general public audience is treated to the pinnacle of STEM educational evolution where tangible results of STEM educations are on display to additionally motivate primary and secondary students to pursue technical academic pursuits.
